Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the difference between Z890, B860, and H810 motherboards?
These chipsets are designed for Intel’s newest LGA 1851 socket (for Core Ultra processors) and dictate the board’s feature set:
Z890: The flagship enthusiast tier. Z890 motherboards offer massive power delivery, full CPU overclocking support, tons of USB ports, and the most PCIe 5.0 lanes for extreme multi-drive storage and high-end graphics cards.
B860: The “sweet spot” for most gamers. B860 boards offer a fantastic balance of price and performance, allowing for memory overclocking but restricting CPU core overclocking, making them perfect for standard gaming rigs.
H810: The entry-level tier. Designed for basic office PCs and extreme budget gaming builds, offering essential connectivity without premium overclocking features.
Do I need a Z790/B760 or a Z890/B860 motherboard?
It depends entirely on which Intel processor you are buying!
If you are buying a 12th, 13th, or 14th Generation Intel Core processor (like an i5-13400F or i7-14700K), you must buy a motherboard with an LGA 1700 socket (such as a Z790, B760, or H610).
If you are buying a new Intel Core Ultra processor (Series 2), you must buy a motherboard with the new LGA 1851 socket (such as a Z890 or B860). Older LGA 1700 motherboards are physically incompatible with Core Ultra chips.
Do Intel motherboards support DDR4 or DDR5 RAM?
It depends on the motherboard socket you choose! The newer LGA 1851 boards (Z890, B860) exclusively support DDR5 memory. However, if you are building on the older LGA 1700 socket (Z790, B760), you have a choice. Some LGA 1700 boards are built for DDR4, while others are built for DDR5. Check the product title carefully—manufacturers usually put “DDR4” or “D4” in the name of the board if it uses the older memory standard.
Should I buy a Z-series motherboard for an Intel Core i5?
Usually, no. Z-series motherboards (like the Z790 or Z890) are expensive because they support processor overclocking. However, standard Intel processors (like the Core i5-14400F) are “locked” and cannot be overclocked anyway. For a standard i5 processor, a high-quality B-series motherboard (like a B760 or B860) will give you identical gaming performance while saving you a massive amount of money. The only time you should buy a Z-series board for an i5 is if you are buying an unlocked “K” series processor (like the i5-14600K).
