Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I use a 13th or 14th Gen Intel Processor in a B860 motherboard?
No. The B860 chipset features the brand-new LGA 1851 socket. It is physically incompatible with older 12th, 13th, and 14th Gen Intel Core processors (which require an LGA 1700 motherboard like a B760). You must pair a B860 motherboard exclusively with the new Intel Core Ultra (Series 2) desktop processors.
Do B860 motherboards support DDR4 RAM?
No. Unlike the previous generation, Intel has completely removed DDR4 support from the new LGA 1851 platform. All B860 motherboards exclusively support DDR5 memory. If you are upgrading from an older PC, you must purchase a new kit of DDR5 RAM to go along with your new CPU and motherboard.
Should I buy a B860 or a Z890 motherboard?
For 90% of gamers, the B860 is the vastly superior choice. Z890 motherboards are very expensive because they allow for extreme manual CPU core overclocking and feature extra PCIe lanes for massive multi-drive storage arrays. However, if you are buying a standard processor (like the Core Ultra 5 245F) and just want to play games at high frame rates with a single graphics card and a couple of SSDs, a B860 gives you the exact same gaming performance for significantly less money.
Can I overclock my RAM on a B860 motherboard?
Yes! While Intel restricts CPU core overclocking on the B860 chipset, they fully allow memory overclocking. This means you can purchase high-speed DDR5 memory (like a 6000MHz or 6400MHz kit) and enable the XMP profile in the motherboard BIOS to run your RAM at its maximum advertised speed, drastically boosting your gaming frame rates.
