Frequently Asked Questions:
How many watts do I need for my PC build?
It depends on your processor and graphics card! As a general rule of thumb:
450W – 550W: Perfect for basic office PCs or ultra-budget gaming PCs with entry-level graphics cards (like an RX 6600 or RTX 3050).
650W – 750W: The sweet spot for mid-range gaming builds (like an RTX 4060 Ti or RX 7700 XT).
850W – 1000W+: Required for high-end enthusiast builds featuring power-hungry components (like an Intel Core i9 or an RTX 4080 / 4090). Always buy a PSU with roughly 20% more wattage than your system actually needs. This “headroom” keeps the power supply running quietly and efficiently.
What does “80 Plus” Certification mean?
The 80 Plus rating is a measure of power efficiency, not necessarily quality (though they often go hand-in-hand). An 80 Plus certified power supply guarantees that at least 80% of the electricity it pulls from your wall socket is actually converted into power for your PC, while the rest is lost as heat.
80 Plus Bronze: The baseline standard. Highly affordable and perfectly fine for budget and mid-range builds.
80 Plus Gold: The industry “sweet spot.” It offers excellent electrical efficiency, generates less heat, and is highly recommended for mid-to-high-end gaming PCs.
Platinum & Titanium: Extreme efficiency for bleeding-edge workstations that run 24/7.
What is the difference between Modular and Non-Modular power supplies?
This refers to the cables!
Non-Modular: Every single cable is permanently attached to the power supply box. Even if you don’t need a specific cable, you still have to hide it inside your PC case. They are the cheapest option but make cable management difficult.
Fully Modular: Every cable is completely detachable. You only plug in the exact cables your PC actually needs, making your PC interior look incredibly clean and improving airflow.
Semi-Modular: A hybrid. The essential cables (like the main motherboard power) are permanently attached, but the extra peripheral cables are detachable.
Can I reuse the modular cables from my old power supply?
NO! NEVER DO THIS! Modular power supply cables are not standardized on the end that plugs into the PSU box. If you unplug an old Corsair power supply, leave the cables in the PC, and plug them into a new Seasonic (or even a different model of Corsair) power supply, you will almost certainly fry your motherboard, processor, or graphics card the second you press the power button. Always use the new cables that come in the box with your new power supply.
