Frequently Asked Questions:
What exactly makes a power supply “Semi-Modular”?
A Semi-Modular power supply uses a hybrid cable design. The cables that are absolutely mandatory for a PC to turn on—specifically the thick 24-pin ATX motherboard cable and the 8-pin EPS CPU cable—are permanently hardwired into the power supply box. All the other secondary cables (like PCIe cables for your graphics card, SATA cables for your hard drives, and Molex cables) are detachable, meaning you only plug them in if your build actually requires them.
Why choose a Semi-Modular PSU over a Fully Modular PSU?
It all comes down to cost and practicality. Fully modular power supplies (where every cable detaches) are more expensive to manufacture. However, since you are forced to plug in the 24-pin motherboard and CPU cables anyway for the PC to function, having them permanently attached on a semi-modular unit doesn’t actually create any extra clutter. You get 90% of the cable management benefits of a fully modular unit, but at a noticeably lower price point.
Can I use custom sleeved cables with a Semi-Modular PSU?
Yes and no. You cannot completely replace the permanently attached 24-pin and CPU cables on a semi-modular unit. However, if you want that premium custom look to match your PC’s color scheme, you can easily buy universal cable extensions. These extensions simply plug into the ends of your stock cables, allowing you to display the beautiful colored sleeves in the main glass viewing area of your PC case while hiding the stock black cables behind the motherboard tray.
Can I reuse the detachable cables from an old Semi-Modular PSU?
NO! NEVER DO THIS! Just like with fully modular units, the ends of the detachable cables that plug into the power supply box are completely proprietary. If you take a detachable PCIe cable from an old EVGA semi-modular power supply and plug it into a new Corsair semi-modular power supply, the pinouts will be incorrect. You will instantly send the wrong voltage to your graphics card and permanently destroy it. Always use the exact detachable cables that came in the box with your new PSU.
